چکیده
15 Noninvasive genetic approaches enable biomonitoring without the need to directly observe or 16 disturb target organisms. Environmental DNA (eDNA) methods have recently extended this 17 approach by assaying genetic material within bulk environmental samples without a priori 18 knowledge about the presence of target biological material. This paper describes a novel and 19 promising source of noninvasive spider DNA and insect eDNA from spider webs. Using black 20 widow spiders (Latrodectus spp.) fed with house crickets (Acheta domesticus), we successfully 21 extracted and amplified mitochondrial DNA sequences of both spider and prey from spider web. 22 Detectability of spider DNA did not differ between assays with amplicon sizes from 135 to 497 23 . Predators in low arctic tundra and their impact on community structure and dynamics
The abundance of predators and their impact on ecosystem dynamics is a vividly discussed topic in current ecology. In my studies, incorporating field observations, field experiments and theoretical modeling, I explored the importance of predators and predation in a low arctic tundra ecosystem in northern Norway. This involved observing the abundance and spatial activity of predators (raptors an...
متن کاملCascading effects of insectivorous birds and bats in tropical coffee plantations.
The loss of apex predators is known to have reverberating consequences for ecosystems, but how changes in broader predator assemblages affect vital ecosystem functions and services is largely unknown. Predators and their prey form complex interaction networks, in which predators consume not only herbivores but also other predators. Resolving these interactions will be essential for predicting c...
متن کاملAnalysis of the predator community of a subterranean herbivorous insect based on polymerase chain reaction.
The identity and impact of trophic linkages within subterranean arthropod communities are challenging to establish, a fact that hinders the development of conservation biological control programs of subterranean herbivores. Diabrotica virgifera (the western corn rootworm) is a severe agricultural pest that lives subterraneously during its pre-imaginal stages and succumbs to high levels of pre-i...
متن کاملArthropod Biodiversity and Community Structures of Organic Rice Ecosystems in Guangdong Province, China
The diversity and community structure of arthropods in an organic double-cropped rice ecosystem in Guangdong Province, China was studied. We compared the arthropod communities in the early season (Apr-Jul) crop to those in the late season (Aug-Nov) crop in 2009. The comparisons were undertaken using a combination of community assessment approaches, including morphospecies richness, the Shannon-...
متن کاملResponse of pest control by generalist predators to local‐scale plant diversity: a meta‐analysis
Disentangling the effects of plant diversity on the control of herbivores is important for understanding agricultural sustainability. Recent studies have investigated the relationships between plant diversity and arthropod communities at the landscape scale, but few have done so at the local scale. We conducted a meta-analysis of 32 papers containing 175 independent measures of the relationship...
